The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the
86th Academy Awards nominations. Here are the nominees for the
Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar.
Dallas Buyers Club (make-up and hairstyling for the film in its entirety): Robin Mathews and Adruitha Lee
This is the first Oscar nomination for make-up department head Robin Mathews. She was also a department head on such films as The Paperboy, Fire with Fire and the upcoming Wild. Adruitha Lee, hair department head, has worked as department head on such films as Friends with Benefits, Killing Them Softly, Warm Bodies and 12 Years a Slave; this is her first Oscar nomination. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (make-up and hairstyling for the Irving Zisman character): Steve Prouty
This is head make-up effects artist Steve Prouty’s first Oscar nomination. He previously worked on such projects as Zombieland, Thor, Men in Black 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness. See the makeupmag.com article for more on the film.
The Lone Ranger (make-up and hairstyling for the film in its entirety): Joel Harlow and Gloria Pasqua-Casny
Make-up department head Joel Harlow has a previous Oscar nomination, and win, for Star Trek (2010). He has also worked as Johnny Depp’s personal make-up artist on such films as Alice in Wonderland, The Tourist and the upcoming Into the Woods. This is the first Oscar nomination for Gloria Pasqua-Casny. She previously worked on X-Men: First Class, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and the upcoming Divergent. The pre-Academy Awards make-up and hairstyling symposium will be held
March 1 at 3 p.m. PST. Beginning Feb. 3, attendees may reserve their
free tickets online at oscars.org/events (limit two per person) or pick up tickets at the box office directly
before the program. Highlights from the event will be posted on oscars.org and on YouTube. The 86th Academy Awards presentation will be March 2 at 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. PST on ABC. Follow the link for exclusive narrated video clips from the nominees.

London-based make-up artist Angela Holthuis and photographer Izabela Habur set a challenge for themselves: Habur
asked Holthuis, a fashion pro, to create “a small story with bold looks
within a small time frame, to test out how far we [could] push
ourselves creatively,” Holthuis said.
Make-Up Artist magazine is now accepting student competition
applications for the 2009 Los Angeles International Make-Up Artist
Trade Show. The themes for this year are Gothic and X-Men Mutants. The competition is open to students of a recognized make-up school and
to those who graduated 12 months prior to the competition. Make-Up Artist will only accept competition entries postmarked by May 22, 2009.
