The Fox series Gotham shows the story behind Commissioner James Gordon’s rise to power in Gotham City before Batman arrived, and even tells the origin stories of some of the Batman villains. The series allows for the introduction of new characters, among them Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney, a strip-club owner and mobstress.
“In many ways, this was my favorite character to create because she is a new creation for the Batman saga,” explains make-up department head John Perkins. “I was free to experiment with her look. After a few camera tests, I knew we had found the right look for her. It’s what I would call High Disco: a nod to the Studio 54 days; vivid colors and metallics blended well but still very distinct.
“Jada is trusting, patient and always adventurous—willing to try anything to get the character right. Overall, a joy to work with,” he adds. Read on to see how Perkins created the High Disco look.
