The responsibility of transforming Carey Mulligan into Daisy Buchanan for Baz Luhrmann’s long-awaited film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby fell to the film’s make-up designer, Maurizio Silvi. As the coveted young socialite, Mulligan sported a beauty mark and naturally defined eyes.

Editor's note: This breakdown originally appeared in Issue 102 of
Make-Up Artist magazine.
Foundation
Clinique Superbalanced Makeup in Alabaster and Face Stockholm Liquid Foundation in Porslin, mixed
Concealer
Clinique All About Eyes Concealer in Light Neutral
Powder
M.A.C. Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in NW 10 and Face Stockholm Pressed Powder in #1. “After I did the base, very lightly I brushed [on] two powders, mixed. I used the powder in some spots like [the] forehead, nose and around it, around [the] eyes and the chin, very lightly because I liked her skin as natural as possible and a little shine in some spots.”
Blush
Clarins Blush Prodige Illuminating Cheek Colour in Sunset Coral
Eye Shadow
“On top I put a M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Carbon very lightly, and then I used Clinique [Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo] in Something Blue blended together with the black.”
Eye Liner
Yves Saint Laurent Eye Pencil in Velvet Black. “Above I used black eye liner to make a line on the edge, not too much longer and higher than her eyes, and blended it.”
Brows
M.A.C. Creme Liner in Dark Brown. “I pluck Carey’s eyebrows often to give it the ʼ20s shape, and I drew on hers using a light brown water-based eye liner, making the end of it long and thin.”
Mascara
Chanel Inimitable in Noir Black
False Lashes
“I put mascara and then individual eyelashes all around the eye. The eyelashes I use are made by myself: I cut them in very small pieces, something like 4 to 5 hairs, each one, and I give them a shape, cutting every single hair from short to long.”
Lips
Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Color in Séduisante
Additional Information
Body: Visiora CN Liquid Face and Body Makeup in Light. “I had to use a very light color for the body make-up and I found the Visiora perfect for Carey.” Other: Reel Creations Reel Color Wheel Palette in Black. “On her right side, I did a black beauty spot.”
