Make-up artist J. Roy Helland knows actress Meryl Streep’s face better than almost anyone—perhaps even Streep herself. He has done her hair and make-up since 1975, through an incredible 35 films. Mamma Mia!, an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, was their 36th film together. Set to ABBA tunes, the story concerns a bride-to-be’s search for her father among the former loves of her mother Donna (Streep). “This is Donna’s jump-out-of-bed-and-start-working look,” Helland said. “That said, Donna is a woman who lives in sunny Greece and has lots of color, so we used lots of make-up just to get a ‘no make-up’ look.”
