This summer, Jordin Sparks makes her big-screen debut alongside the late singer/actress Whitney Houston in the August 2012 release of Sparkle.
“Whitney’s make-up was done by myself and Kym Lee, one of the two key make-up artists I had working with me,” said make-up department head Marietta Carter-Narcisse. “Whitney and I had a great time together—it felt like we’d always known each other … and we spent a lot of time talking about finding a balance between being a working mom and being there for your children, too.
“[Whitney] loved La Prairie skincare and Votivo Red Currant candles, so we burned candles in the trailer whenever she was having her hair and make-up done. Her make-up was kept very clean, since she was playing the mom. Her make-up was applied with a foundation brush and then blended using beautyblenders. All highlights and shadows were done prior to applying powder. She loved lip gloss, so we cheated a little on the era,” said Carter-Narcisse.
Carter-Narcisse noted that she had “a wonderful team [and] two key make-up artists: Kym Lee and Lauri Cuppetilli,” and that the movie make-up was a “total team effort.” Editor's note: The breakdown for Sparks was originally featured in Issue 97 of Make-Up Artist magazine, but can also be viewed here.
