For Christina Aguilera’s sexy, over-the-top looks in the movie Burlesque, make-up artist Kristofer Buckle wanted everything to feel theatrical and extravagant. “I think there is something beautiful about seeing the truth behind the magic of theater,” he said.

When it came to Aguilera’s “Guy What Takes His Time” number for the film, Buckle envisioned his client in large, pearl-like lashes that would create continuity between her make-up and wardrobe. His challenge was to create lashes that were ultra-light so that they wouldn’t bounce and sag with every blink. Buckle recalls the moment when it all came together. “Stopped at a light in the back of a taxi, I watched as a crew was unloading a truck of packages,” he said. “There was a large chunk of broken Styrofoam and little tiny Styrofoam balls had broken off and were blowing down the street. A light bulb went off. I told the taxi driver to wait and I jumped right out and grabbed that chunk of Styrofoam. And then I got to work.”

When Buckle showed director Steven Antin the sketches of his concept, Antin thought the lashes might be too distracting. “After standing in my kitchen with tweezers and lashes and glue, and jumping out of taxicabs, those damn lashes were going on her face,” Buckle said. “So I put the lashes on Christina and we had Steven come to the trailer. We blasted the song and Christina performed to the song and got those lashes into the movie.”

Buckle also has a bit of hard-won wisdom regarding the importance of using durable products: “When you read about all of the waterproof make-up I used, it may seem excessive or unnecessary, but you never know what's going to happen during 18 hours of shooting.”

For example, there is a moment in the scene where Aguilera takes a quick swig from a glass of water. A prop glass that had been empty for every rehearsal was unexpectedly filled with water on the first day of shooting. “Christina threw the entire glass of water directly onto her face,” Buckle said. “This could have been a disaster which would have cost production a lot of money to redo that make-up, but it remained unharmed.”

Skincare

Highlights / Countour
Paris Berlin Poudre Lumière (a pearlized loose powder) in LU 2, to mimic the texture and sheen of the pearls on Aguilera’s costume. The powder was applied under brows, across the lids, and on the high points of the cheekbones.
Additional Information
To create the lashes, Buckle took a pair of spiky lashes (NYC New York Color Eyelashes, #314 ) and cut every other spike off to create room for each ball. He coated the lashes in Elmer's glue to stiffen them. Then, holding each ball carefully with tweezers, he cut a slit in each one. With a dot of glue, he slid a ball onto each spike. Once they dried, he painted the lashes black with acrylic paint and dusted them lightly with a pearlized white eye shadow to augment their spherical shape.
