Make-up artist Eryn Krueger Mekash faced challenges with Drew Barrymore on the roller derby film Whip It. “She was directing, prepping, doing a thousand things at once and she wasn’t always available to come in the make-up trailer for a proper sit-down in front of a mirror,” Mekash said. “There were times I did Drew’s make-up in the bleachers of the roller derby track and did touch-ups while she was setting shots. Another issue was making sure the actual bruises she got while skating were covered for continuity—they were always changing. The big issue we had on all the girls was keeping their make-up on all day while they were skating. It was a very humid summer in Michigan and the track was blisteringly hot.” Nonetheless, Mekash said, the film was a great experience.

Foundation
Clé De Peau Cream Foundation in O10 and O20, mixed, and a touch of Amazing Cosmetics® Amazing Concealer in Medium Beige, applied with a Ve Neill foundation brush. “I lightly covered areas that needed it—mostly cheeks and chin. I used very little because Drew has fantastic skin,” Mekash said.
Concealer
Amazing Cosmetics® Amazing Concealer in Fair and Medium Beige (mixed) under eyes and over eyes in corner near nose with same brush
Powder
Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush in a mix of waterproof All Clear and Perfectly Clear for derby looks; for non-skating days, no powder for a dewy look
Blush
Stila Convertible Color in Petunia on the apples of the cheeks. “This stayed on really well [for] skating and directing long hours,” Mekash said.
Eye Shadow
Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Shell over whole lid, lightly
Brows
Brushed-through brows and the occasional tweeze
Mascara
For non-skating looks, Lancôme Fatale mascara in Black or CoverGirl LashBlast in Very Black; for skating scenes, Colorescience Cry Me A River waterproof.
Lips
M.A.C. Lipstick in Russian Red (“For durability—it is super matte and never moved with all the crazy physicality that Drew was doing.”) and Stila Glaze Lip Liner in Crimson
Additional Information
Skin Illustrator Glazing Gel colors for injury scenes: broken nose, slaps and bruises. “They stayed on and didn’t move,” Mekash said.
