Katherine Heigl is a knockout when she’s not getting knocked up. So make-up artist Linda Grimes had her hands full making the stunningly gorgeous Heigl into a plain-Jane bridesmaid. In 27 Dresses, Heigl’s character—who’s actually named Jane—begins with a solid, dependable look. As she emerges from her shell over the course of the film, however, her features are intensified with a stronger lip color or a more defined eye. “I gave her a sophisticated, understated look,” Grimes said. In a scene featuring an Indian wedding, Jane’s dress and the setting are more exotic than usual. Her look had to work with her bridesmaid obligations, but, said Grimes, “There was a little room for fun. I wanted to show Jane off as shimmery and colorful.” Because Grimes sympathizes with actors who spend long hours each day getting their hair and make-up done, she tries to be as organized as possible. She says she has her products laid out, mixed, in order and ready to go on her palette to minimize chair time as much as possible. “Some days I timed my trailer time at 24 minutes with [Heigl], but I would say the average was 35 minutes,” she said. Lip pencil and gloss were always saved for a last look on set. During filming, meanwhile, Grimes tried to get behind the camera as much as possible to watch footage and make necessary corrections for the next day. “As a make-up artist, DVDs on a monitor do not translate as well,” she said. “Maybe it’s good for hair, but not for the nuances of make-up.” Grimes left us with a final movie make-up tip: “Generally I like to prep the skin and start with the eye, the eye make-up, first. I find that if I do that, I use less on the overall face—the rest of the face comes into focus more readily.”
